#1 Way to Get Lots of Fans

November 14, 2010

This step is so simple yet often overlooked.

What you want to do is let your friends know about your page and ask
them to like it. Here is how you should do that.

Every Facebook fan page administrator has the ability to “suggest to
friends.” This suggestion option is only available to page administrators
and can be found just under the profile picture on the top left of the
fan page. The customized Facebook message is sent to the inbox of each
friend the administrator selects. The message also has a link to the fan
page you are trying to promote.

The average Facebook user has 130 friends. If you suggest your
fan page to all your friends you could easily have over 100 people
“like” your page in just a few days. This step is so simple, yet extremely
effective.

Also, if you really want to take advantage of this feature you can ask a
few of your closest or most trusted friends to become temporary
administrators for you fan page. Then ask them to suggest the page to
all their friends. If you have seven of your friends do this you could have
over 1000 fans in no time.

Take advantage of the “suggest” option and watch the fan number sky-
rocket!

I hope this helps.

P.S. Please leave some feedback on this if you have a second.

  1. Good tip. The idea of temporarily extending the administration and have colleagues push even further is clever. I will explore it with one of my clients.

A question for you – Would you use Facebook for B2B engagement? When does it make sense to do so? So far I have only recommended Facebook in consumer scenarios.

    • It may depend on the type of business that is using social media. My business sells signage for B2C and B2B. We have developed a lot of relationships with other business owners in the area. Because of this it is a good move for us to engage with other businesses and show an interest in their Facebook pages. This helps keep your brand name in their thoughts. It also gives you an opportunity to see if they may have need of your services. If they do need something you can mention it in a friendly way… you don’t want to sound like you just use Facebook as a means to drive sales. If your business does a lot of B2B I think it would be wise to show an interest in what your clients and potential clients are doing with Facebook. The tricky part might be budgeting your Facebook time wisely. What do you think Hakan?

  2. Hi Joshua,

I noticed that Facebook has recently removed suggest to friends option from fan pages. Chk out this page – http://www.facebook.com/Healthizencom

  3. Hello Joshua, thank you so much for the tips, I was wondering in case B2B once you set up a page and you have friends who already know who you are and what you do … and some friends of your closest friends as you recommend , the chances that they are your your clients and potential clients are not that much … What do you recommend to do next ?

    • I think it will depend to a large extent on what your target industry is. I work for a sign company and I work for a fast-food company and they both take different approaches and will get different results. For the sign company I focus and rely on networking with other business owners. Get them to add my page as one of their fan page favorites. We steadily gain Facebook traffic but it’s not as easy as a restaurant. For the fast-food restaurant we focus on having contests. We recently had a contest that resulted in 400 new fans in one week. There is no way that contest would work with the sign industry. So figure out what your industry is and then find out what your target audience is interested. If you can, offer them free services or products if they win a contest. Make sure the contest will result in a lot of new fans. Ill see if i can come up with some ideas for your situation.

  4. P.S. TVDATA is a stock footage archive. We license / sell stock video (professional video originated in professional formats) and other multimedia content to worldwide producers of advertising, feature and corporate films via online Digital Media Library http://www.tvdata.tv

what woudl be the 3d step in Facebook marketing to
attract worldwide producers, visual researchers to the TVDATA Facebook page? In case its up and running.

    • Do you already have a fan base and some clients? … Or are you starting the business from scratch? I’m thinking about a referral program that is run through Facebook.

  5. This is a great example of extending a Facebook Business Page into a mini website. Now that Static FBML is about to be history the solution is building Facebook Apps to add new pages.
